As we get into the meat of the school year, I started thinking about what are some hallmarks of great 1:1 classrooms. Whether 1:1 or not, great classrooms may share some characteristics of best educational practice. However, I have tried to focus on some of the characteristics that are key in 1:1 classrooms.</div>

This statement stands on the premise that a 1:1 environment is inherently different from a traditional paper and pencil classroom. If you don't agree with that statement then you might disagree with a lot of what I write. The world continues to change at an accelerated rate and 21st century learning environments are different. Not only are they different, the continue to change and transform. So what are some major ways 1:1 classrooms are different from a traditional classroom?</div>

<b>Asynchronous vs. Synchronous</b></div>

Ironically, although this is probably one of the most poignant changes taking place in the 21st century, it is one that seems to be one of the slowest to be recognized by all stakeholders in the educational process. Learning is no longer limited to the 8 to 3 school day. It isn't limited by the classroom location. Students can learn anywhere at any given time if they have the resources to do so. In Korea, we are blessed to have tremendously fast internet and wireless access available nearly everywhere. We also have a plethora of mobile devices that can truly support learning for our students in a variety of modes and mediums. With trends such as the <a href="http://beliterate.blogspot.com/2011/05/flipped-classroom.html">flipped classroom</a> and blended classrooms, education is just beginning to take advantage of asynchronous tools. Information on the internet waits for me until I'm ready for it.</div>

<span class="s2"><b>Digital Containers</b></span></div>
<div class="p1">
The physical homework tray at the back of the room has given way to the Moodle course, wiki, or website. Teachers in a 1:1 setting must have a digital container for their class. This container does much more than collect student work. It is a hub. It links to resources. It facilitates collaboration, dialogue, and communication. It creates a home base that brings learning together and tracks progress.</div>

<span class="s2"><b>Focus on Product</b></span></div>

Yes, I know traditional classrooms do this too. However, 1:1 classrooms dismally fail to achieve the very goals of being 1:1 if they do not get this philosophical pillar in place. It is not about the laptop being a word processor or just a word processor. It is about students creating a product so their learning is meaningful to them. <span class="s2"><b>Display Student Work</b></span></div>

Students desperately want to have an audience. Students may like their teacher but that isn't really the audience they are looking to please. They want to share their work with their friends and even family. Sometimes this is inside the school and sometimes it is outside. High achieving 1:1 learning environments find ways to celebrate and display student work to a valued audience for the students. It gives them pride to have their work "published"and inspires them to go above and beyond on their own.</div>

<span class="s2"><b>Classroom management and common vocabulary</b></span></div>

If a teacher has poor classroom management, it will only get worse in a 1:1 setting. Give students engaging projects and know when it is time to close the lid and get students off the screen. The laptop is only one tool available for learning. It is not the sole avenue of learning. If this is an area you are working on, I suggest developing common vocabulary across the school such as...lids down, quiet on the set, hands up (no typing), share screens, freeze...just to name some examples. When teachers set clear expectations that are commonly known in every class, it makes it easier for both the teachers and students.</div>

Everyone went to school so why wouldn't they be able to give sound educational advice? I've been to the doctor too but I suppose you might want to give some thought to accepting medical advice from me. To be even more specific, I've seen way too many IVs inserted. That doesn't mean the nurse is handing me the needle. I've been to Starbuck's but that doesn't mean I know how to make a white chocolate mocha. You get the point.</div><div class="p2"><br />
</div><div class="p1">The world continues to change at an accelerated rate and 21st century classrooms are a different environment than what we grew up in. Not only are our classrooms different, but they continue to change and transform at this accelerated pace. Educators are being asked to learn new information and strategies faster than ever. Because the amount of information and research available is greater than ever before, the pressure for teachers to be experts in their subject area is immense and more difficult than ever. I think the tremendous amount of transparency in education plays a role in this as well.</div><div class="p2"><br />
</div><div class="p1">Teachers must exemplify the same 21st century skills that we seek to instill in our students. They must filter information, collaborate with students, and leverage information and tools for learning in an ever-changing environment. And perhaps one of the most difficult areas to navigate is the parents that pressure teachers to be something they are not...and shouldn't be. This does not mean that parent pressure is a bad thing. We don't get do-overs with children so we have to get it right. However, too often parents want the education they had because that is what they know...not the education their children need for the future.</div><div class="p2"><br />
</div><div class="p1">It is in this 21st century environment that great teachers are to be prized more than ever. Although I would argue salaries often reflect the value we place on teachers, value occurs in other ways. I have been blessed with some outstanding colleagues at both of our schools in Korea. Teachers, value yourselves and your work.</div><div class="p2"><br />
</div><div class="p1">Parents, in this era of transparency and rapid change, respect the teachers your children have and acknowledge the future requires a different education than the past. Teachers have a skill in creating learning environments for children. Ask questions about what they are doing. Seek understanding. Be a collaborative learner with teachers and see that the art of educating students is not an easy one to master. As you engage in this process, you may find some powerful ways to come alongside and help your child. And like so many pieces of art, each classroom may look, feel, and smell differently. If we squash the art of teaching, we are indirectly limiting the education of the next generation to the past when they so desperately need to prepare for the future. I am blessed to work at schools where parents place such a high value on their teachers as so evident even in the last couple weeks.</div><div class="p2"><br />

For those new to the topic, it means giving lectures or instruction to students over the internet and using the in class time to actually do work, discuss, or solve problems. Teachers often accomplish this via podcasting of lectures or screencasting sample problems for students to use as a model. You can see examples of it on many educational blog posts and Youtube is increasely filled with more academic content than just Angry Birds tutorials. I've been watching this trend and seeing some of our teachers begin engaging in it.<br />

Salman Khan has a great TED talk on what has eventually developed into Khan Academy. He has some interesting insight and thoughts that are fantastic for reflection. He has found strategies to gather data to impact what is being presented back to students. Take some time to watch the video if you haven't.<br />

As I've watched the application of these ideas and concepts to the classroom, some educators have really used this with tremendous benefit to students. Research has shown the benefits for students to be able to pause, rewind, and carefully take notes on a lecture. Some teachers have given students a lecture to view at home and then use the in class time for discussion or to practice solving problems. Aside from increasing the class time available for working with teacher assistance and student to student interaction, sending these lectures home gives students a finite time of homework. <br />
<br />
On the other side of the coin, I have seen teachers put a lot of extra time on students because they now put every lecture up on Youtube. It is important for teachers to retain balance in the work they send home. I also think the art of the <i>interactive lecture</i> can be lost in this format. At times, lecture is an appropriate way to deliver instruction (despite what I would call myths that this is never appropriate). However, interactive lectures engage students and flex the content around the responses and reactions of the participants. And I do mean participants. To relinquish a presentation to one way video can leave out the interactive nature of teaching. It's not all bad but something to consider within a flipped classroom context.<br />
<br />
We need to be careful that we don't misapply the flipped classroom methodology so it overburdens students and removes an important element of personal interaction from students that is the learning and dialogue we desire in our classrooms. As with so many things in life, we need <b><u>balance</u></b>. I have seen some applications that take and mistakenly apply it in ways that just aren't helpful and really don't embody the same type of online education that Khan and others advocate. I've approached this idea with caution because extremism can be dangerous in any trendy fad.<br />

I specifically wanted to compare it to my 15" Macbook Pro (2.53 GHz Intel Core i5 processor with 4 GB RAM). I'm sure you can read more technical comparisons on the web. I thought I would provide my feedback as an administrator in the educational setting. </span></div><div class="p1"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: small;"><br />
</span></div><div class="p1"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: small;">With the solid state drive (flash drive like a USB stick for those non-techies), I found it was superfast to copy files to the MBAir. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The solid state hard drives and associated benefits are the future of laptops. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The screen is really sharp and crisp (which also shows in the specs). Overall, although it was less workspace, the smaller screen size wasn't a big deal unless I was trying to work in one window and reference another window at the same time. It was not a big drop to go from 15" to 13". I also found the trackpad more sensitive and responsive than my current MBPro which may just be due to a newer model.</span><br />

</span></div><div class="p1"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: small;">The laptop is amazingly light and lives up to its "Air" title. At the same time, it felt solid and wasn't flimsy despite its thin body. It had 2 USB ports, the same as my MBPro and I really liked having them on each side. In some ways, this was more convenient than having them both on the left. The hitch for some users is that you may have to plug more things in like a USB to ethernet line adapter or a disc drive when needed. I also applaud Apple for keeping the SD card slot in the 13" MBAir model. This is a big plus for me.</span></div><div class="p1"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: small;"><br />
</span></div><div class="p1"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: small;">The boot up time at around 15 seconds was roughly 1/3 of the time needed for the MBPro to startup. I found video imported into iMovie slightly faster on the MBAir, probably due to the higher write speeds on the solid state drive. Exporting and rendering the movie took 3 times as long on the MBAir (31 minutes as opposed to 9 minutes on the MBPro). I concluded that it came down to processing power. The MBAir just takes a lot longer to render. You should plan on doing it overnight or over lunch for bigger projects. I also found iMovie sluggish for longer movie creation (7 minute movie). This may be remedied with more RAM. I had no issues at all with a short 3 minute edit I worked on. iMovie was the only program that I found sluggish, even with only 2 GB RAM and running multiple programs. Garageband performed well under these same conditions.</span></div><div class="p1"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: small;"><br />
</span></div><div class="p1"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: small;">As I tested the MBAir over approximately 2 weeks, I will note that I did not have some of my usual programs running in the background since I didn't transfer everything over. For example, I didn't run iTunes or my task list manager in the background. Although the computer performed well for most tasks, I would likely advocate for 4 GB RAM for my own daily use as I think it would help the multimedia and number of programs I use.</span></div><div class="p1"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: small;"><br />
</span></div><div class="p1"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: small;">I have to say the new MBAir was very impressive. Like many gadgets, it has a niche--mobility. If you want mobility and a strong all around laptop, I was very impressed. If you are doing a lot of multimedia and rendering of projects that take higher CPU processing, you may want to consider sticking with the MBPro for right now. </span><br />

The newest MBPro models utilize the i5 or i7 processors which are quite high performers. The potential addition of the i3 processor in the MBAir in future models may make it even more attractive and I wish they had added it to this one. The other two small perks that MBAir misses is the backlit keyboard and ambient light sensor to adjust screen brightness automatically. These are hardly big omissions but aspects of the MBPro I do like. </span><br />

I took a couple hours to join some other administrators in going to a local foundation that ministers to the mentally and physically disabled. It is supported by municipal funds and the foundation includes something like 7 different facilities including a K-12 school, dormitory, factory where they make circuit boards, and a printing business.<br />

</div>Seong Se Rehabilitation School has all kinds of disabilities from mental to severe physical impairments. Their facilities are built for the many wheelchairs in the facility. The kids have smiles on their faces as they learn English, math, computers, etc. and attempt what are very difficult physical coordination tasks for some. The vision of those that run that foundation is to raise the view of the disabled in Korea. As a result, they run a first class facility that does an excellent job educating these children to accomplish a level of functionality some might not have dreamed possible.<br />
<br />
As I walked around and watched both the adults that were working and the kids in school, I had to stop and reflect on what I (and we) value in life. In our fast-paced, busy world, it is easy to become <i>transactional</i>. We give something and expect something in return. Sadly, we often apply this concept unconsciously even in our most altruistic moments. Even in helping the poor or the disabled, we want them to contribute to society. What does that mean? <br />
<br />
Does it mean they can take care of themselves? Does it mean they can provide some work or labor for others? Or is the goal to make sure they don't drain tax dollars as adults? Are we benevolent yet transactional at times? If we expect this kind of return in life, I fear we will be disappointed at many levels (and I'm not just talking about by people with disabilities). The smiles and lives of these people contribute greatly. For some it will not be a economic contribution nor a measurable gift. However, they offer us an opportunity to give of ourselves and get nothing back. To give freely without reservation or expectation of return. They can remind us of the value of human life. They remind us of our humanity - that life isn't a series of transactions.<br />
<br />
We need foundations like this to keep us from losing perspective. We need to teach our children in our schools this principle as well. We have to remember what is truly valuable. We need to take advantage of the opportunity to give gifts of our time, energy, and love. Perhaps I didn't depart from my usual topics as much as I thought when I first started this post...<br />

Perhaps it would be accurate to say application overload in some cases. As we move from device to device or application to application, maintaining some semblance of organization is critical. Yes, critical. I'm not an organization freak as those around me will attest, but having some idea of how to organize information and resources is important. We constantly run across websites we want to refer back to later. We identify resources that are useful to share with others. We also access certain information from different browsers or applications. For example, I have about 3 different applications for twitter just on my laptop which I use interchangeably. If we do not have a plan, chaos will take over and we will just miss out on resources buried in an overwhelming pile of stuff. We need to help students with this skill too. I'll outline some of my own personal strategy to fight back the chaos.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">I am always surprised how many people don't use bookmarks (<a href="http://beliterate.blogspot.com/2011/04/bookmarking.html">see my previous post for more on bookmarking</a>). I have all my common sites in my toolbar. This makes them easy to access anywhere. I use <a href="http://www.xmarks.com/">Xmarks</a> to sync all my bookmarks across all my devices. This also makes them accessible by logging into the Xmarks site when on a public computer. Although Xmarks can do other things like sync passwords and such, I use it solely for syncing bookmarks across devices and browsers. It has an install plugin for almost any browser on any platform. I have upgraded to the premium and find it worth every penny but a free version is available.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">I also use <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/">Dropbox</a>. Lots of different applications allow you to use Dropbox to access information across devices (<a href="http://web.appstorm.net/roundups/data-management-roundups/10-more-killer-dropbox-tips-and-tricks/">see more info here</a>). I find this is a valuable tool for having files and information easily synced across multiple devices. It also makes a backup always available in case a device is lost or stolen.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />

I have several methods to deal with this information.</div><ol><li>I have created a free account with Instapaper. I have added this bookmark applet to my toolbar on my browser which allows me to just click on "Read Later" and it is saved to my account. Instapaper can be accessed on my iPhone or laptop easily. It tracks what I have read and I just archive after I have finished. I always know what articles are yet to be read. </li>
<li>I often just skim my Twitter and don't do extensive reading. So I email myself a tweet at my gmail account. I have setup a filter that automatically removes it from the inbox and labels it so I can review it later. Filters are powerful and often underused email feature. This also makes it easy to search tweets I want to find later.</li>
<li>I can use my <a href="http://www.diigo.com/">Diigo</a> account to bookmark certain links right in my phone.</li>
<li>Xmarks makes a lot of this simply because it syncs my bookmark applet for Diigo and Instapaper across browsers and my phone.</li>

I use 2 tools to meet my bookmarking needs.<br />

First, I use my local laptop to bookmark items that are private to me. That might range from financial institutions to travel resources. These are things that I save for my own personal reference. I do use <a href="http://www.xmarks.com/">Xmarks</a> to sync bookmarks across browsers and devices (I'll write more about this in my next post).<br />

Secondly, I use <a href="http://www.diigo.com/">Diigo</a> to bookmark a fair amount of material that I want to find later. It seems the bookmarks on my computer are more static and ones I use over and over. The ones on Diigo are usually things I want to reference and search out later. The other aspect of Diigo is the social bookmarking aspect. Although I can choose what is public and private, most of my bookmarks are public. I have created several lists where I just add links. I am pretty diligent about tagging so I can effectively search for these resources later. Adding links to Diigo is easy on both my iPhone and my laptop. It is also my way to share some of what I find for those that want to follow the list.<br />

It is probably my most active list. I like to bookmark good articles and such I find here. I don't necessary agree with everything I bookmark, but it allows me to archive stuff in one place.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.diigo.com/list/pricedm/cool-tools">Cool Tools</a>: This is just for software and applications I find that seem neat. Some are for me to look up later and pursue further reviews. These aren't always ones I would recommend. It is like a brainstorming space or a post-it note to check out later.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.diigo.com/list/pricedm/japan-earthquake-links">Japan Earthquake Links</a>: I created this one to compile some resources I found and that might benefit students on the recend natural disaster.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.diigo.com/list/pricedm/leadership">Leadership</a>: I like to post general leadership links here.</li>
</ul><div>Diigo has some other cool features like posting highlights and sticky notes onto websites. Some teachers find this valuable to help students as they are reading and research information. I personally don't use that as it isn't my purpose. It might be useful for some classroom teachers, particularly in conducting some webquests.</div><br />

I believe our 5th grade students at GSIS benefit from a 21st century learning space. Although a late add-on to our existing building, it facilitates the learning we desire in students. We have walls that can open to create more open space and combine the 2 classrooms. The setup is very flexible for collaboration and interaction between the 5th grade sections.<br />

Within the classroom, students can collaborate, produce, create, present, etc. We have a cart of Macbooks that are accessible to students to create a 1:1 opportunity. We have interactive whiteboards. We have teachers planning and collaborating together. The physical space facilitates many different learning activities and options for students.</div><div><br />

His focus is on business and he said people do 2 things at work: <i>pitches</i> and <i>projects</i>. In relation to this statement, he made two further comments. First, very few things are 100% right or wrong in the real world outside of standardized tests. Secondly, not everyone agrees on solutions. <br />
<br />
In his most recent book entitled <i>Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us</i>, Pink challenges some assumptions of what motivates people. He says money is a motivator. He also notes that greater rewards improve performance on routine, automatic tasks. However, even when “rudimentary cognitive skills are required,” performance drops with greater external rewards. His argument rests on science that says we aren’t motivated as much as we would like to think by the carrot and stick approach.<br />
<br />
Pay people enough so money isn’t an issue. Pink says the important aspects of motivation are autonomy, mastery, and purpose. Autonomy gives people choices on how they engage a project or problem. People want autonomy over their time, task, team and technique. Although Google is perhaps the most famous example of what they call 20% time where employees can work on anything they want during 1 day a week, it has been in existence well before Google. Pink argues that mastery comes with progress and people need feedback to progress. Annual performance reviews don’t cut it. Lastly, Pink talks about purpose and the need to understand why we are doing certain work. (By the way, Pink gives many more examples of the research in his presentations and book.)<br />
<br />
Pink argues that we need to incorporate autonomy, mastery and purpose into our workplaces as well as our schools. We need to help students understand why they are learning certain topics and doing particular tasks. They need feedback so they can progress towards and attain mastery in certain skills. They need more time spent on the why instead of the how.<br />

Did you catch it? If you are regular reader of my blog, you might of noticed that we just went full circle over the course of the weekend conference. We started with <a href="http://beliterate.blogspot.com/2011/03/why.html">Simon Sinek talking about the why</a>. We progressed over the weekend and Pink ended the weekend talking about motivation. And a vital component of motivation is the purpose...or the why.<br />
<br />
We need to have a clear why. We need to communicate it over and over again. It needs to be repeated frequently and intertwined with the culture of our institutions. On an individual level, we need why in our lives to give us direction and purpose. The why helps us know what we want to master and how to make the most of our autonomy. The why helps us know who we are and what we are about. Do you know what motivates you? Do you know your why?<br />

He compares the current information revolution to the advent of the printing press. If current trends continue, the information on the internet will double every 15 minutes by 2020. It is critical that students be literate on how to filter and find relevant and accurate information when they need it. <br />
<br />
Rankin goes on to talk about the future of books on mobile devices. He says that books will be social, customized for the reader, augmented (know where I am with location-based info), and collaborative works that are interactive and media rich. He goes on to describe them as mobile in our pockets and portable between multiple devices that remembers what you have read, even on different devices. It is a transformation of reading and literacy as we know it. Some people disagree or just don’t like it. Many of these things are already in development. I’m not sure it is much of a choice at this point. Ready or not, here it comes. All that said, I'm not sure it is a zero sum game, meaning that just because reading may transform, the current traditional book will disappear. I see it more as additive at this point.<br />

Sinek uses Apple and Steve Jobs as an example of communicating the why so effectively. Apple has extremely high brand loyalty.<br />

That is all well and good but why did TCIS and GSIS choose Apple for teachers and students? It comes down to 2 core reasons: 1) we want the best learning tools possible for students; 2) Apple is transforming classrooms (and much more) with its innovations.<br />
<br />
Apple is a company that works ahead of the curve and its impacts are felt far more than many realize. They have transformed the music industry by moving digital content to a digital medium. iTunes is the largest distributor of music in the world. The iPad has sold over 15 million units in approximately 9 months. The overall growth of mobile devices is astounding and the iPad is the standard that others follow. The delivery of content to the iPad is changing the digital landscape, particularly the publishing industry. Products like these will alter the use of not only textbooks, but all books. It will not just substitute paper for digital reading, it will create an interactive environment for learning that changes fundamentally how we read. It is not substituting digital for analog...it is transforming the nature of how we read and interact with text.<br />
<br />
We want transformed classrooms that ooze learning. We want students to be the center of the learning and want to come to school everyday. We want them to understand the why and “love their job.” (You can substitute learning for job in that last statement if you want.) We want them to be prepared for the expectations placed on them in a rapidly changing marketplace regardless of what profession they choose to pursue. Apple provides the tools and support to create a transformed classroom that is student-centered to meet these goals. <br />
<br />
We want the best tools for students. We want transformed 21st century classrooms that advantage our students in powerful ways. Of course, we are going to partner with the best company to accomplish our goal. Why not Apple?<br />

The first keynote was from <a href="http://www.startwithwhy.com/">Simon Sinek</a>. He described the ordinary process of pitching ideas or products as starting with the what, progressing to the how, and the why last. In his study of exceptional people and organizations, he found that they approach it backwards. They start with the why. The why inspires people to follow. The why creates followers that might never engage with the what or the how.</span></span></div><div class="p2"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: small;"><span class="s1"></span></span></div><div class="p3"><span class="s1"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: small;">For this inspiration to happen, Sinek says we must have clarity in the why. It must be clear to us and communicated clearly. We have to be consistent in the how, and lastly, we have to be authentic in the what. Vision and communication must accompany each other with the why or else it won’t be conveyed to others effectively. Do you have people in your organization that get the vision and communicate it well? Identify them and give them opportunities to convey the why to your parents, faculty and students. It doesn't matter what official "position" they have. Engage your audience and make them interact with the content and topic. It's not about you...it is about your audience. Know why you are there and be clear on what you want to accomplish in the time you have. If you don't know what you are presenting, it's doubtful others will figure it out either.<br />
<br />
What makes a presentation effective? First, think back to the presentations you remember. If you remember it, something about it must have been effective, right? Too many of us have sat through boring presentations that could have been half the time or involved someone reading to us. Don't make your audience leave thinking they could have picked up your handout.<br />
<br />
Speaking of handouts, think of presentations in 3 parts: my presentation "script," slides/visuals, and handouts. Don't just print your slides as a handout. I like to include additional information or sources of information on handouts. I also add content that I want them to take away...or they will try to scribble down so furiously that they miss what I'm saying.<br />
<br />
Know your content. I like to have a few notes and ideas when I speak to keep me on track and make sure I hit what is important. However, powerful presenters know what they want to say. Many of them can do it entirely without notes. I find this impressive and something I need to improve upon. Nothing can lose an audience like an awkward pause as you fumble your notes or squint to see the tiny writing on the screen to jog your memory.<br />

I could say more but <a href="http://www.slideshare.net/jessedee/presentations">Jesse Desjardins</a> may say it more emphatically and articulately with his presentations than I can. If you communicate with an audience regularly, or even occasionally, you should really take a look. (Hint: All educators do this regularly.)<br />

It is so similar to stories of technology use in Africa. When you put resources in people's hands, they are creative and do things we might never predict. Among other thoughts, what are the implications for this story in terms of community development? <br />

This news article is probably so powerful because it is a story. We need to get students engaged in stories and creating their own stories. I imagine many of our students could come up with innovative solutions to so many of the challenges our world faces. Let's engage them to know, understand, and act...Perhaps we could read about one of their ideas on Yahoo! The article says, "Computers have been in schools for the last 30 years, but with few exceptions, they haven't been used to their full potential." Hmm...sounds pretty much right on to me. Yet, how many things fit into that category. The format and utilization of this resource in our schools has been slow going. As I read this article, I see Kay saying technology for technology's sake is not very productive. Where is the depth to the learning?<br />

Now, is this the first time you have heard this? Alan Kay's comments seem like what many others have been saying for some time. Leverage technology to add depth to the learning and inquiry process. <a href="http://www.zdnet.com/blog/education/project-red-do-11-right-or-dont-do-it-at-all/4327">Project Red's recent research</a> says the same thing. Do it right and it impacts student learning significantly. <br />
<br />
Some take Kay's comments and those like him as depressing due to the failure of our schools to take advantage of an amazing opportunity. On the other hand, it gives me hope for the future. We are gaining momentum in our schools on how to put technology in a school environment and help students inquire, collaborate and give feedback at high levels. We are recognizing the need to move forward now in ways that have not happened in the last 30 years. For me, I see hope and anticipation at what is poised to by a dynamic time for students. And we need to take action. Our context with technology is different than it has been in the past. We have to turn "clickable" kids into vibrant, dynamic learners with whatever tools we can put in their hands.<br />

Are you being left behind? Are you ready to participate? Some need to be pioneers. Others need to come along and sustain the momentum. It starts with one transformed classroom at a time. It wasn't the point and just happen to be a small tool that I used during the time together. I used it in that specific session because I wanted participant-to-participant interaction, rather than participant-to-facilitator interaction. It worked well for my purposes. <br />

</div><div>From there, one of the administrators attending went on to share it with our school leadership team and use it in a meeting. One of our coordinators then proceeded to use Wallwisher with MS and HS staff during PD days. From there, some teachers took and applied it to their classrooms and students engaged this tool for learning.<br />

</div><div>When I first introduced this tool, I had no idea it would spread in this manner. I'm sure that others may have heard about it from other sources than just inside our community and my original introduction. However, good educators share useful tools with each other. I love it when students say they know what we did in professional development because their teachers all tried it out on them the following week. It means the PD was useful and applicable.</div><div><br />
</div><div>If you are a technology leader (formal or informal), share useful tools with your colleagues. And don't just share a link, <i>share how you used it to enhance learning</i>. With many tools or technology integration activities, you can do this in a 5-10 minute casual conversation. When other educators see how it impacts learning and your enthusiasm of the impact it had on your lesson, they are much more likely to implement it for themselves. <b>Be intentional in your leadership, regardless of your formal position.</b><br />

A blog post by Alain Meyer entitled "<a href="http://www.smartlyedu.com/blog/posts/7-a-new-era-of-homework-excuses">A New Era of Homework Excuses</a>" caught my attention. He talks about how students take advantage of teachers and their ignorance when it comes to technology. <i>Technology</i> becomes the excuse for whatever a student has failed to deliver. I think he has a point. We allow students to take advantage of us in our attempts to extend some grace.<br />

</tbody></table>I recently sat down at lunch with a student who had failed to give a presentation the previous day for the teacher sitting next to her. She forgot her laptop that day. <i>Really?!?</i> We are 1:1 laptop school. How do you forget your laptop? I questioned her further. I asked her if she really had the presentation done. Of course, she said, yes. I questioned her further about what the timestamps on her files might tell me. She dodged the question and we had a laugh, moving on to other conversation. I have no doubt that she took advantage of the extra time to work on her presentation to say the least...and probably didn't have it ready to begin with.<br />
<br />
While in college, I've worked for hours on a paper and then lost a half day's work. Did that change the due date? Nope. Work faster, stay up later, and make it better the second time around. The other day I was working on a document and lost it (due to my own user error). That work did not suddenly go away. I had to redo it and still make my deadlines. It's the real world and although grace is nice, we need to push students away from excuses and toward responsibility. I suppose having them take responsibility for their own learning is a major goal here. Life doesn't always wait for the planets to align. Sometimes we get curveballs at the worst possible times. <br />
<br />
As educators, we continue to integrate more technology in the classroom. We need to hold students accountable. I'm not advocating losing all understanding and graciousness with students. We just need to use it a little more sparingly and hold ourselves accountable for some learning in this area. I see these two companies offering extremely valuable tools for education. Apple integrates education-focused software seamlessly together in easy to use ways. It provides a fantastic platform to demonstrate understanding and learning. Apple provides a creation tool, which is at the top of <a href="http://www.techlearning.com/article/8670">Blooms revised taxonomy</a>. It is also built to readily share these creations.<br />
<br />
Google adds a component of communication and collaboration. Although largely text-based in many aspects, the power of collaboration comes out in this suite of applications. The opportunity to be a learning community and share the learning can have dramatic impacts on a classroom. <br />
<br />
In my last post, I talked about being <a href="http://beliterate.blogspot.com/2010/10/overwhelmed.html">overwhelmed</a>. Although we have many more tools available at our schools, these two companies provide the core for using technology to enhance learning. I continue to see huge benefits as both an Apple school and as users of Google Apps. Teachers can start at this core and develop a foundation for technology integration in their classroom. So much of what we want students to do can be accomplished with this core software without chasing the ever-changing Web 2.0 apps. I'm not opposed to Web 2.0 options and their are some great ones out there. I just advocate going deep and learning the core of what you have at your fingertips to increase the depth of learning taking place. In technology, it is hard for people to know what they don't know and as a result, they can often move to new things without accomplishing the full potential of what they already know or have started to learn. The world of technology resources is vast and seemingly endless. I see many people just overwhelmed by the technology available and it comes out as frustration and a feeling that it's hopeless to even try getting up to speed.<br />

Steven Anderson wrote a <a href="http://web20classroom.blogspot.com/2010/09/feeling-overwhelmed-join-club.html">nice blog post</a> focused on beginning teachers and those that feel overwhelmed. He rightly points out that teaching the first few years is vastly different than having a few years of experience under your belt. Can you imagine walking into many of our schools just out of college with no experience and encountering many of these technology resources for the first time, particularly coming from a teaching program that fails to prepare you for this reality in schools? And first year teachers are not the only ones overwhelmed. Experienced teachers can have these exact same feelings in technology.<br />
<br />
Some teachers give in and do nothing, resigning themselves to irrelevancy and hopelessness. I see some tech savvy teachers and professional developers reinforce this by overwhelming teachers with what's available. It is important to get outside our limited perspectives but those responsible for professional development also need to know their audience. Sometimes less is more. For many teachers, focusing on 2-3 things that can powerfully impact their classroom is sufficient for a year of growth. The depth of use by the teacher can really help students learn and benefit the classroom instead of a surface glaze of many different "cool" tools. <br />
<br />
We have to exercise the same discretion and information literacy that we need to be teaching our students. We need to filter out what is most important in a digital world and determine how to leverage it for learning. As technology leaders, we also have to help others find balance so teachers are not overwhelmed. In the midst of our push to move people forward in their journey, we need to do so responsibly so we don't undermine ourselves with a lack of depth. <br />

If you are an overwhelmed teacher, model the goal-setting you ask your students to do. Don't give up! Yes, check out the people passing by. This is a new Polycom unit donated as a thank you gift from Simpson University. GSIS is a host to their Master's program for international educators. I have found that although I am very comfortable participating from a distance via phone or skype, others in meetings are often less comfortable and as a result, the meeting is not as effective. As videoconferencing grows in popularity even through common programs such as Skype, comfort levels are increasing. </div><div><br /></div><div>This Polycom unit will open doors for us to connect to various locations around the world and access resources in a very clear and effective communication method. We have already talked to colleagues and partner schools around the world about ways we can use it to increase collaboration and expose students to new learning. It is exciting to see this technology reachable for our PK-12 students. We look forward to expanding this implementation to include more collaboration between TCIS and GSIS in the future. One take away I had related to connectivity. I know that there are times for laptops during class and a time to close the lids. However, my assumption has always been that students are connected when they are using the laptop. We use a lot of GApps so this makes sense in many regards. Korea also has fantastic internet. However, at the same time, I see a high value in turning off the wireless with purpose. We need to help students stay focused and avoid distractions. Turning off the wireless when they are working with local tools is valuable. Other strategies like full screen mode can be helpful too.</div><div><br /></div><div>The bigger picture issue is creating an environment conducive to learning involves many aspects that we often take for granted. For some reason, since I work with technology, people seem to think I'm a good person to ask. And since I mentioned Facebook in my last post, perhaps it is relevant to address it here. My answer...<i>it depends</i>.<div><br /></div><div>Let's ask a different question. <i>Should teachers/educators be on social media?</i> <b>Yes</b>. No question. If we want to connect with students and meet students where they are, social media is the way to go. Educational research tells us that we need to be relevant to engage students effectively. It also tells us that if we can extend our time spent on learning and our curriculum, then achievement goes up. Now put those two together. If we engage students with relevant questions/topics and use a medium that they are using outside of school for socializing, we are likely to extend school related discussions that promote learning, inquiry and authentic application of concepts in the real world. Many have unpacked this much more than I am here. This is only 1 aspect of leveraging social media to benefit learning.</div><div><br /></div><div>I think the "friends" on Facebook is a bit more complex. Some people advocate 2 accounts...1 professional and 1 personal. I think you have to think about how you use social media. I have some accounts that are personal and my friends/links reflect that. I have other accounts that are solely professional. Based on our roles, this can be easier for some than others. For me, Facebook is personal. There is nothing on there I'm ashamed of. Actually, I don't post much. Rather, I use it to keep up with friends across the world. I also don't have a class of students that I work directly with right now with my given role. <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/dlpunc">Twitter</a> is my professional account. Don't get me wrong. The personal nature of who you are bleeds over into the professional as well it should. It is reasonable to keep the two separate. Bottom line, if you are posting things that students should not see or might be better left to their imagination, don't friend them on Facebook.</div><div><br /></div><div>No matter what medium you use for social media and connections, your life is more transparent than it has ever been. We know more about each other. Modeling and making good choices is paramount. So is self-control. You can't post confidential or "soon to be public" info before it actually is public. Many people have had some heavy consequences for mistakes in this area and it deserves due caution. All said, social media is a place to extend learning and leverage for the good of both student learning and professional learning. Don't be scared. Perhaps I'm behind the times in US trends because I rarely watch US TV. Companies used to put their website up. Now, it seems that Facebook is where the masses are so that is where companies are seeking consumers. By all appearances, they are right. Social media continues to grow and Facebook is a one-stop shop for so many users to access communication. So why not market there? It makes sense. The marketing of products has been going on there as well, but the scale of use has gone well beyond grassroots efforts to become a high priority in major brands.</div><div><br /></div><div>How many schools have sites on Facebook? The image on Facebook may likely be the public image of the school and viewed more often than the website. We often spend a lot of time on our websites and these are important, but I wonder if public relations and branding of schools (particularly internationally) needs to give more attention to the social media component. My guess is that most schools have a presence on a Facebook. And it's not limited to Facebook...check Wikipedia among others to see what it says about your school. For GSIS, we have decided to take a small group and go deeper with content than we can with a larger group. In consultation with division leaders, we invited some faculty to participate in a series of PD sessions stretching from September to March 2011. We want to create a cohort of learners that can share a common experience and take their knowledge to the next level. We focused on what she called the visual and audio channels. We had a great day of understanding how to construct learning by starting with visuals. We spent a lot of time with iPhoto in the morning. Then we moved to podcasting with GarageBand in the afternoon. Like the previous day, we had fun and learned skills that had immediate applications to classrooms. We also embarked on a larger journey of transforming our perspective to create truly effective 1:1 classrooms.
